In just one week, You’ve Got Worms will be broadcast on BBC Radio 4. It airs on Sunday 8th June as part of the Illuminated documentary slot — and we can’t wait for you to hear it.
Science communication doesn’t have to flatten complexity — it can deepen curiosity. That’s what we hoped to prove with this piece.
Worms are often dismissed as background life. But when you listen closely — to the researchers, the farmers, the parasitologists, the soil ecologists — a different picture emerges. One of elegance, mystery, and ecological brilliance.
Bringing this story to radio was about more than facts. It was about rhythm, emotion, voice, and tone. Art and science aren’t separate worlds; they’re different ways of paying attention. Working alongside the BBC’s Illuminated team, we tried to hold both: the rigour of research and the magic of storytelling.
We borrowed from poetry, theatre, music, and microscopy. We collaborated with scientists who see beauty under the lens, and with artists who chase truth in unexpected places. Together, we made a piece of work that’s scientifically sound and creatively alive.
If it draws someone closer to the soil — to questions, to wonder, to worms — then it’s done its job.
You’ve Got Worms airs Sunday 8th June on BBC Radio 4 and will be available shortly afterwards on BBC Sounds.
